    Description

The Hague June 2020. The first pandemic wave has just been fought off in the Netherlands, when a serie of protests emerge. A large #BLM protest of over 5000 people gather in Amsterdam, to protest against the police violence that led to the death of George Floyd and so many others like him. Meanwhile a lot of people are unsatified about the measures concerning the pandemic and they wish to protest as well. The local government decides to prohibit this. In a result the protesters do not accept this and gather in The Hague for a peacefull protest, but the military police decides to beats them down with excessive violence.

For this artwork Raemansky has choosen to use a monochrome palette, with a unique iridescent green background. The matt black elements create a soft and tactile contrast with this green. The backgroundcolor also gives the painting a mysterious fluctuation in it's shades and allows the transparencies to display more depth.

  • About this artist

    Concept

Nanda Raemansky is a multidisciplinary painter and digital artist who lives and works in the Dutch bordervillage Eede in the Netherlands. She began her artistic practice in 2003 with declaring the statement: From today on, I am an artist! She developed her artistic skills on her own terms and led a self-tought practice. Untill in 2010 she decided to go study at the Academy of fine arts in Ghent, Belgium.

As an artist, she is fascinated by the concept of freedom, how it works, evolves, is experienced and dealt with. She seeks answers to these questions in social commentary, urban spaces, graffiti and street art movements.

"I am interrested in the concept of freedom and like to search for signs of freedom - or the lack of it - preferrably in our surroundings."

Raemansky mostly likes to work in series. She will come on to a subject of choice by watching the news and documentaries, reading books, searching the internet and looking into history, but sometimes she just happens to stumble upon an interesting scenery, while walking through the streets.
Once she has found her subject of choice she will try to travel there, to have closer look. There she will gather footage by making a photoshoot, videorecordings, soundrecordings, notes, found objects (litter) and sketches. She will later manipulate this in both digital and analog format, layer on layer, combining them and transforming them from one medium to another and mixing them to allow the image to change and reform freely during every transformation.
